A Positive Pet Boarding Experience: Are you planning a last-minute vacation before the kids go back to school?
You’ve already arranged the flight, hotel, and rental car but there is one more item to check off your list…who will care for your furry family member?
Don’t despair! With recommendations from your vet or friends and a bit of research on your own, you can find a boarding kennel that will be your pet’s home away from home whenever you travel whether it’s a well-planned or last-minute trip.
Here are a few tips to guide you and put your mind at ease.
• Trust your gut – First impressions can make or break the deal. When you visit a kennel take notice — Is the place clean? How does it smell? Is the temperature comfortable? Are the staff members/caregivers friendly? Is the atmosphere calm or chaotic? Will your pet have plenty of space and is the facility secure? Doe the staff seem genuinely interested in caring for your pet?
• Ask questions – Do they answer without hesitation, offer plenty of information, and seem knowledgeable? How might they handle emergencies or anxiety issues? Do they mind if you call to check on your pet? Is someone in the building or monitoring activity overnight? Can you send along your pup’s special toy or a familiar blanket? If your pet has special needs such as diet, medications, etc. can they accommodate that?
• Prepare your pet – Make sure to visit the kennel before dropping your pet off for the first time. Better yet, if they offer doggie daycare, have your pooch spend a few hours or a day there to get familiar with the people and surroundings. The more social your pet is, the better he will adapt to other people, pets, and places.
• Remain calm – Many times the issue is more about how you, as the pet parent, will handle leaving your pet behind rather than how the pet will adjust and, naturally, the first time is always the most difficult. Remain calm and go about your business as usual as you prepare to leave. In the hours before dropping your pet off, take him out for a walk and some exercise and playtime. When you get to the kennel, leave your emotions at the door! It can upset your pooch if you are clingy and sobbing when dropping her off.
When picking up your pet, take the time to talk to the staff about your pet’s stay and behavior. By establishing a respectful, trusting relationship with the kennel owners and caregivers, your pooch will be happy to stay there among familiar faces and surroundings, and the kennel will welcome your pet’s friendly furry face. Plus, you will have peace of mind each time you travel.
